DHL Global Forwarding’s Less-than-Container-Load (LCL) business unit will look to expand its fields of expertise this year with specific emphasis placed on enhancing its position in the automotive, life sciences and chemicals, and fashion and apparel sectors to achieve further growth in 2012.

This new push is part of the company’s goal to not only continue to grow its business, which it has continued to do even in what was a challenging 2011 for LCL operators, but also to provide a greater range of services for its customers.

Traditionally, the LCL unit is known for its expertise in handling technology, consumer goods, engineering and manufacturing, DHL Global Forwarding’s Singapore-based global head of LCL, Marc Meier, told Hong Kong Shipping Gazette in a recent interview.

In addition to creating new niche markets in terms of the type of products the operator handles, Mr Meier explained that the group would continue to build on its efforts in recent years to build up its service offerings in the emerging markets and intra-regional trades as well.

“A key to being a successful LCL service provider is in the range of service you can offer to the customer,” he said.

“What I want to do, and what I have been doing over the last couple of years, and will continue to do, is really push my team to go into these so-called non-traditional markets. This is one way in which we can differentiate ourselves in the market,” he added.

The senior executive said the key focal points for expansion this year would include intra-Asia, Africa and the Americas.
