Lufthansa Cargo has launched weekly service from its home base at to the US automotive metropolis of Detroit, using an MD-11 aircraft from January 23.

Initially the route is being operated from Germany every Monday, and will switch to every Sunday with the commencement of the summer schedule.

The airline said that the return flight will stop off in New York on the way back to Frankfurt, in a statement.

“The new freighter connection supplements the daily flights operated by Lufthansa passenger aircraft, and offers our customers more capacity and greater flexibility,” said Achim Martinka, Lufthansa Cargo vice president of the Americas. “The automotive and pharmaceuticals industries, especially, are fuelling the growing demand.”

Starting in March, Lufthansa Cargo plans to expand its Detroit operations to twice per week. This new connection is the seventh US destination served by the cargo airline’s freighter network in the US.

The cargo carrier last year transported 1.9 million tonnes of freight and mail and sold 9.5 billion revenue tonne-kilometres.
